DAYTONA BEACH -- "Duet of the Arts," the new exhibit at the Art League of Daytona Beach, tiptoes onto the shaky ground between the visual and performing arts, and ventures over the line between art and literature.
And, for the most part, the Beaux Arts of Volusia's spring show meets the challenge well. Jane Rockhold's "Who is Sylvia" shows a smiling young woman reclining on a sofa, in reference to a Shakespearean character and song. By contrast, Peter Cerreta's mixed-media study, "Pictures at an Exhibition," offers a literal interpretation of its crossover theme.
Don Kennedy's bright, geometric canvas captures the youthful joyousness of the old hymn, "Come to the Church in the Wildwood." And "Carousel, " the big, bright abstraction by Jean Banas, is an explosion of orange and pink tones that expresses not so much the classical Broadway musical as its emotional impact on its audience -- and, in the delightfully varied theme show, its viewers.
Styles, mediums and subjects in "Duet of the Arts" allow its members the full range of creative self-expression. Yet, thanks to a theme that invited surprisingly broad responses, the works hang together in a logical, lyrical progression that is an artistic statement, personal and accessible. -- Fine Arts Writer, Laura Stewart
