JUDGE’S COMMENTS/AWARDS - MEMBERS’ SHOWCASE 2008

BEST OF SHOW - #30 - Patricia Zalisko - “Masterful, strong brushwork with an earthy/industrial/environmental content. Dynamic movement, a powerful achievement. A few areas of complementary color interplay actually glow.”

FIRST PLACE - #75 - Roann Elias - “An intimate, personal statement, highly original and creative. The ‘painted book’ takes on many meanings, just ambiguous enough to allow viewers to participate in their own personal way. The pages’ surface has been manipulated and often ‘tortured’ effectively.”

SECOND PLACE - #16 - Marta Crawford - “The colorful glow is enough to grab viewers, but the masterful loose brushwork inside of the image is a special treat. A kind of contemporary genre icon.”

THIRD PLACE - #95 - Linda Knight - “The use of materials is highly effective. The ‘well-worn phrase’ has been creatively expressed. You’ve built an altar/fortress; great authors/writers need to justifiably be placed atop.”

ACHIEVEMENT - #65 - Mindy Colton - “The mapping surface, combined with the long-legged stride, expresses content beyond the equine figure. Effective use of material.”

ACHIEVEMENT - #43 - Peter Cerreta - “The use of colorful greys is more difficult than most people think. Expressive human-like (in some cases human?) facial and hand gestures work to create a wonderful X-ing composition.”

ACHIEVEMENT - #118 - Diana Barringer - “The figure is used here as shapes to create a cohesive composition. As the eye travels, it finds delightful tidbits of color, texture, brushwork and drawn marks that fascinate the viewer.”

ACHIEVEMENT - #41 - Marilyn Catlow - “Fused glass is often beautiful in and of itself, but here it has been combined withh collage and installed sculpturally to create highly effective ‘window altars’ of color.”

RECOGNITION - #136 - Ines Maisannes - “Effective use of the three glass pieces - a piercing of space, frozen in movement. Swirls in the glass of the figure help stimulate the sensual movement.”

RECOGNITION - #73 - Beau Wild - “Charming work, with painterly execution that portrays a quiet personal moment at the outdoor café, an undisturbed moment in one’s life.”

RECOGNITION - #77 - Judy Gilmer - “Vibrant color with double split complimentaries used in a visually dynamic landscape-oriented (or at least suggested) composition. Gutsy brushwork.”

RECOGNITION - #129 - Bob Grayson - “Effective use of symmetry here with just enough variation to keep the viewer’s attention. Light and shadows used dramatically to create a very contemporary still life.”

MERIT - #120 - Earl Weydahl - “Creative mixed media composition. A sense of mystery is evoked.”

MERIT - #15 - Don Kennedy - “’Shots’ of glowing orange against the analogous blue scape create visual surprises and suggest landscape/skyscape/seascape aspects all in one. A strong watercolor.”

MERIT - #132 - Betty Morris Parker - “The surface treatment here is intriguing. After the viewer contemplates the abstraction, he then wonders how it is achieved. Strong design - highly creative.”

MERIT - #128 - Patrick McMullen - “A strong object study photo with a Zen aspect that calms, and a design that transcends the average photograph. Bravo!”

HONORABLE MENTION - #91 - Melissa Mason - “Strong brushwork in the landscape aspects of this highly effective work.”

HONORABLE MENTION - #127 - Sylvia Camille - “Strong photograph with a composition that is even stronger than the subject matter (and that’s a good thing).”

HONORABLE MENTION - #135 - Els Meijns - “A playful, surreal scultpure that has a sense of whimsy within the carefully executed ‘engineered’ piece. Effective combination of materials and textures as well.”

HONORABLE MENTION - #125 - Amelie Rogers - “The vase opens as a dramatic flower with an interior and lip surface that glows in an opposing display of color, to the more graphic patterns of the exterior.”

JUDGE’S CHOICE - #52 - Nanette Long - “Two major planed of opposing color and technique that manage to work beautifully together - striking work, professionally presented.”

JUDGE’S CHOICE - #113 - Rainey Dimmitt - “A playful caricature that amuses. The daring intence use of the green/pink complements adds to the interpretation of the figure.”

JUDGE’S CHOICE - #141 - Emile Dillon - “Architecture is a difficult subject and must be carefully handled in acrylic; the artist’s skill is appreciated. Hard-edged realism, handled well.”

JUDGE’S CHOICE - #109 - Gretchen Nass - “The grey/black window has been carefully placed within a more chaotic red/orange/black field to give a whole new planar dimension to the viewer. Well designed.”

JUDGE’S CHOICE - #98 - Kathy O’Meara - “Color usage here is subtle and restrained although the value contrasts certainly are not. Almost ‘nautical’ in theme, this painting shows daring and dramatic brushwork with a touch of graphic line.”

JUDGE’S CHOICE - #19 - Karen Ann Patton - “Although a very conservative subject, the artist uses strong technique and color.”
