AWARDS AND JUDGE‘S COMMENTS - MEMBERS’ SHOWCASE OCTOBER 2011

BEST IN SHOW - #94 - Steve McLachlin - “Koyannisqatsi: West Virginia, Coal Dust Cloud at the Tipple” Acrylic, Marker
Sponsored in part by the City of Ormond Beach in memory of James Bierwagon.
“ I was initially drawn to the juxtaposition of the oversized machinery and the smaller human figure, suggesting the interaction of technology and humanity. The dark colors denote the grittiness and also the dangers inherent in coal mining. I especially appreciated the expressive scribbling that adds movement to the composition. The artist has given us a strong interpretation of a very unusual subject; the piece commands our attention and is most worthy of being the best in show.”

FIRST PLACE - #40 - Mindy Z. Colton - “Nature’s Gift: Generations” Mixed Media
“The artist shows great imagination in the use of a variety of materials - including wood, wire, and paper - to create this family of graceful horses. The curving lines of the animals and their placement move the eye around the grouping and keep the viewer engaged.”

SECOND PLACE - #77 - Roann Elias - “Thief of Hearts” Mixed Media
“The artist has created an intriguing narrative with elements that invite interpretation: the parrot, the container of hearts, and the two figures. Who is the actual thief? The male figure references a classical Greek statue - or is he a figment of the woman’s imagination? The artist combines texture, color, composition, and a sense of mystery to make this a winning piece.”

THIRD PLACE - #76 - Marta Crawford - “Good Night Kiss” Oil
“The artist has employed flawless classical technique to elevate the humble eggs to objects worthy of our contemplation. The angle of the container creates strong diagonals and interesting corners. The entire composition appears to be illuminated.”

DISTINCTION - #49 - Don Renner - “Jimmie” Watercolor
Special award for watercolor sponsored in part by Don Kennedy
“The artist combines masterful technique in watercolor with a thoughtful interpretation of subject matter. The abstracted background is an effective contrast to the realism of the figure, and the artist has demonstrated his ability to render convincing skin tones. Jimmie’s expression engages the viewer - is he looking back or looking ahead?”

DISTINCTION - #39 - Karen Ann Patton - “Twilight on the Ormond Loop” - Pastel
“The artist has used her medium in a highly original way to create this expressive landscape. The soft, feathery strokes and interpretive color choices invite the viewer into the scene.”

DISTINCTION - #79 - Diana Gilson - “Epiphany” - Mixed Media
“The bold colors, the blue figure, and the energetic layering of paint, combined with the hints of an outline on various shapes, all indicate that this artist understands the joy of creating.”

DISTINCTION - #65 - Fay Samini - “Open Your Mind” - Ceramic
“The artist teases the viewer with a surprise - a secret compartment that opens up - hence the title. A whimsical and somewhat quirky piece that I found delightful.”

ACHIEVEMENT - #44 - Patricia Zalisko - “South Street” - Acrylic
“The artist has used thoughtful color choices and complex layering of paint, along with expressive markings, to create a somewhat mysterious scene that invites the viewer to come in an linger. The more I looked at this piece, the more I discovered.”

ACHIEVEMENT - #124 - R.J. Sullivan - “The Chair” - Acrylic
“The artist has taken on a real challenge with the perspectives in this work, and has rendered them convincingly. The strong use of lights, darks, and shadow shapes enhance the composition. The artist has elevated a simple chair into a monumental object.”

ACHIEVEMENT - #62 - Susan Furrie - “Artichokes at Play” Watercolor
“The artist combines geometric and organic shapes into a strong composition. The black negative shapes and the cropping of the artichokes add further interest. The shaping and coloration of the leaves on the artichokes give them a sense of weight and roundness.”

ACHIEVEMENT - #117 - Rebecca Moore - “Le Chapeau” - Graphite
“The artist has successfully incorporated graphite and the texture of the paper to create this subtle and nuanced rendering. The effective interpretation of the shadow shapes, combined with lost and found edges, make for a small piece with a big impact.”
