STACY BARTER’S OIL
PAINTING DEMONSTRATION

FREE - OPEN TO ALL - Monday, April 10, 9:00 am

Michael Siegel’s Oil Painting Workshop March 8-12, 2006

This workshop was successful because of the many volunteers helping out: Deborah Elmquist for providing lodging for Michael and Kyla; Amelie Bush for helping with the food and lodging for a workshop participant; Connie Krzyzowski for providing transportation; Peggy Landeen and Jim Taylor for volunteering to model free of charge. Because of the expense in bringing Michael here, we couldn’t have done it without this help. Thank you all! Thanks too to the participants of the workshop. Your attendance validates our efforts to bring well-known artists to our members for workshops. We enjoyed having Michael here and the students were pleased with the experience.

OUT OF THE ORDINARY

This indeed is a very special exhibit. The Art League was fortunate to have artists of this caliber showing their work here. Greg Jones is the recipient of 850 awards in art exhibitions including over 100 Best in Show awards. He exhibits regularly in outdoor art shows around Florida—you may have seen him locally. He received his undergraduate degrees from Polk Community College, in Winter Haven and the University of South Florida in Tampa. Mike Barickman has an impressive background, showing his work in many exhibits throughout the south. He has a MFA degree in sculpture from the University of Delaware; was awarded Best in Show, Arts in the Park, May 200 and 2004 among many other awards for his work. His work is shown in galleries and has had articles published about his art. And our very own long-time League member, Judy Gilmer, whose work had its own space in the back gallery, complemented Barickman’s art by going from his orange beach balls to her large vibrant paintings. Judy is an accomplished artist with her work being included in collections in America and Europe.

PLUMBING THE CREATIVE DEPTHS
OF OUR ARTISTS ON DISPLAY

Gregory Jones is indeed "Out of the Ordinary" in his works of art as he reaches within to free the creative child, the innocent child to create the diverse moods depicted in his paintings all drawn from his life. He moves from the "Large Can of Brushes with Wrench,” the wrench ready to wrest from his waiting brushes the meaning of his work, to movement and gaiety which prevail in his "Dancing Sofas.” His somber "Black Neighborhood" a door with no knob, dark windows that allow no light in, speak to us of the dark moments he dwells upon.

Mike Barickman brings utilitarian objects to his work to create interconnectedness and interdependence in his view of the world. It all begins with a trip inviting the observer to step onto his blue outlined road and observe his collection of objects. There is movement throughout his arc that circles to begin his journey of interdependence. Out of the ordinary, yes, but with meaning for each of us is not to forget the small inconsequential things that tie us together on this planet.

Judy Gilmer's brilliant reds, yellows, oranges pull us in, hold us captivated with their profusion. Gaiety and life prevail in each of the 14 exhibits. Standing primly throughout are her perfectly orchestrated prim kimonos, her memories of the Orient upon which she draws to create the fullness of life she experiences. It is the timelessness of the vast areas of China from which she draws to create her vivid works of art. And “her art is an extension of who she is.”

Out of the Ordinary? — no, “Extraordinary” are these works of art. Each of the artists reach deep within to define life as they feel and know it. Mildred Kinbar

We at the Art League appreciate our volunteers. One of the most important volunteer job is sitting the gallery on weekends. Without your help we would be unable to keep the gallery open for visitors on Saturday and Sundays. If you haven’t done so recently, please take a look at the dates needed in the foyer and see if you can help us.

The Moore & Moore
Exhibit - March 2006

This was the first of our planned exhibits to show off the work by students attending classes here at the League. What a great beginning! The walls of Studio A were filled with beautiful and creative collage art by students in Robin’s class. Her students also brought wonderful refreshments to add to our tables. Visitors at the opening were treated to both the gallery exhibit and this new venue. Robin’s class has been able to expand because of the new studio, she has been filling both studios with her students.

We look forward to all the classes showing their students work at each opening. The next class exhibiting will be Elaine Vice’s watercolor class at the April 2 opening.

Susan Bottaro (above) has reached her goal of winning 100 ribbons when she won first place in watercolor at the February Art Fiesta. Congratulations Susan!

FAMILY ACADEMICS
IN THE HOME (F.A.I.T.H.)

On the evening of March 2, the Art League hosted an art show for children who are schooled at home. The group was thrilled to be able to use our facility for the exhibit and there was quite a turnout for this event (about 100). Not only were we aiding this youth group, but by doing this we introduced new people to the League. The photos below were taken during the evening by Elaine Vice.

Gallery Sitting: Please help us with sitting the gallery on Saturdays and Sundays from 1:00 to 4:00 PM.  This is so important for us to be open these days for the public to visit our shows and of course our "Members' Gallery."

Members Gallery: Bring your paintings in (no wider than 42") to be hung in the "Members Gallery." We have been successful in selling paintings from this area, but even if your work doesn't sell, it's a place to show your work. Visitors have often remarked about the work in this gallery, enjoying them sometimes more than the current show in the main galleries. And, we are proud to show off the work of our very talented members.
