FROM ANOTHER VIEWPOINT By Mildred Kinbar, Exhibit Reviewer

TEACHING OUR CHILDREN LIFE THROUGH ART

Art Educators’ Exhibit

In a written comment on the 2006 Volusia Art Educators' Exhibit, Deputy Superintendent for Instructional Services, Volusia County School, Chris J. Colwell wrote Volusia County, "…is fortunate to have dedicated art teachers, who themselves, continue to use art as a form of self-expression." And Suzi Preston, Visual Art Specialist, elaborated on that thought to write, “… teachers present images from personal problem solving investigations, a practice reflected in their students' learning about the creative the process."

As I studied the various art forms on exhibit, their unrehearsed commonality projected a subliminal yearning to come back to the simple beauties of nature and life. And it started with more than just 'looking.' I had to go beyond. If 'see' is to discern, understand and feel what we look at, it was unashamedly proclaimed in the wide eyed "Emergent Face." The captured innocence and purity in the eyes of "Jessica" or the plaintive yearning in "When Is Mommy Coming?" instilled a tenderness to be remembered.

The brilliant hues of "Morning Sunlight" beckoned viewers to rise early and greet the announcement of a new day with awe and a feeling of reverence. Nature abounds throughout the exhibit in many forms. "Liquid Meditations" finds fish swimming among lily pads floating throughout. "First Catch of the Day" repeated the laws of nature getting caught up in the intensity of the swoop, the practiced eye, and the helpless prey.

Do we just look at a leaf and paint" Autumn Leaves #1" or do we become one with the single leaf ready to fall, hanging on, bruised from the elements, magnificent in color to the very end.

"Monarch Wreath" reminds us of the black and red butterfly, now rarely seen, to agree that it is, indeed, a 'monarch." In "Triptych, or Tribute to Sitka #3, we enter an enchanted forest, luxurious in colorful flora and fauna. The scene, which stills the heart and mind of the rider astride a horse, captures the magnificence of the moment as he stops to let it enfold him.

At "Tent Rock 2" we are asked to marvel at the handiwork of nature as it carved these magnificent formations through the ages. Gazing at "Quattro Cecim", the essence of birch plywood, although refinished, our focus travels from the close grain of the wood in its early growth to its peeling, striated state as it ages. Always reminders of life.

It is indeed a "Lunatic Picnic" when four young men can happily share their company, thoughts and their unusual array of food with mice and ants. Again, a subtle reminder for us to open ourselves to a gentle therapeutic 'lunacy' when caught in our moments of despair.

“Circumvoluted Worlds of the Submerged Mind" once again tell us what we are all about. The range is vast as it takes us from the sun devoid depths of the ocean to the light above, in the form of a fixture, a beacon to which we must return.

New Awards Sponsor’s
Program is Under Way!

The Art League has been visiting businesses in the area inviting them to sponsor awards for our exhibits. We are enclosing the flyer we have been presenting in this newsletter. If you know of a business or individual who might be interested in supporting the arts we would appreciate your passing this on to them. We are pleased with the response so far with only a few businesses contacted:

Tropical Frames has pledged $500 (Best in Show) for the next several members’ shows; The News Journal has pledged $300 (Award of Excellence).. Other award sponsors are: Wall-Y-World, Fast Frame, and Billy’s Tap Room.

Many of our members have been working hard to bring this program about, but we could use more help. In the past, several of our members have sponsored awards—most recently: Pat and Paul Thompson to name a few. Who might you contact?: your doctor, dentist, art stores, framers, accountant, hairdresser, dry cleaner, attorney, restaurants— anyone you do business with on a regular basis might be interested in supporting the arts and receiving great publicity by doing so. Although our awards have increased in number, our sponsors will enable us to increase the amount of money per award (as shown on the flyer).

Please click here to view the form for this purpose (there will be copies available at the Art League).

Sculpture & Raku, 2-Day Workshops with Estella Fransbergen

Sculpture — Dec. 1 & 2
Raku — Dec. 15 & 16
$150 per workshop

Fire and glaze dancing on clay to bring about uniquely colored mediums is the ancient art of Raku.

Estella Fransbergen practices this ancient technique and designs one-of-a-kind pieces that reflect beauty and natural inspiration. Estella's passion for this ancient practice and her creative voice shaped her artwork. Estella uses her hands to mold each piece while deriving inspiration from nature and her inner need to replace in nature what is being lost. To her, the art speaks of new life and the cultivation of awareness for body, mind and spirit. The expression in her artwork is the shape of the piece that she guides with her hands, and the freedom is the color that the fire and glaze imposes. In essence, she surrenders each piece to the natural elements of earth, wind and fire and a unique piece of art is born.

Gallery Sitting: Please help us with sitting the gallery on Saturdays and Sundays from 1:00 to 4:00 PM.  This is so important for us to be open these days for the public to visit our shows and of course our "Members' Gallery."

Members Gallery: Bring your paintings in (no wider than 42") to be hung in the "Members Gallery." We have been successful in selling paintings from this area, but even if your work doesn't sell, it's a place to show your work. Visitors have often remarked about the work in this gallery, enjoying them sometimes more than the current show in the main galleries. And, we are proud to show off the work of our very talented members.
