XLVI BEAUX ARTS EXHIBITION – 2007As usual the Beaux Arts of Volusia’s 46th annual members’ exhibition grabbed our attention and did not let go until we had seen the entire show. Connie Krzyzowski’s life-sized sculpture held center stage, while Peter Cerreta’s stylized painting kept us wondering “what in the world is going on!” The judge, Richard Schreiner of St. Augustine, reviewed his criteria for judging before handing out the Awards. A retrospective exhibition of Beaux Arts members was held in “Studio A.” |

HOLIDAY BAZAAR and MEMBERS MINIATURE EXHIBITIONOur first HOLIDAY BAZAAR was a great success. All the artists and artisans had fun as well as making some sales. We will be bringing these exceptional artists back at our next opening. We had 51 paintings in our first MEMBERS MINIATURE EXHIBITION. The work was exceptional. I am sure many of our members who were not able to visit the December Opening will want to come in to check out the possible Holiday gifts. |

On April 4, 1948, The Art League of Daytona Beach held it's 16th annual exhibition, at it's new home - 433 South Palmetto Avenue - our present location. The Art League of Daytona Beach was founded in 1932 by local artists and art lovers, Don Emery & John Rogers. The land was sold for $1500, half of its value at that time, by Mrs. William Morgan, an Art League member. Francis Walton, prominent architect and Art League Board member, prepared and contributed plans for a suitable building. Through the generosity of other members and numerous fund drives, The Art League of Daytona Beach became a reality; it was designed and constructed to display and preserve the works of art created by its members and guest artists. For the past 59 years, The Art League of Daytona Beach has served this community and provided a place for artists to gather, learn, and display their art. Its history is permanently entwined with that of Daytona Beach, and it remains one of the crown jewels of this city's cultural offerings.
The Art League is a precious jewel worth protecting and that is just what more than 75 of out dedicated, tireless members have been doing for over a year now. Changes in zoning and street scape projects have kept us on our toes going to endless city meetings. Our energy returns before a meeting when we hear a member say “are you bringing a car load” to another member. Thank-you to everyone who continues to help the League stay here for the next 60 years!!!
5th Idea: Volusia County High and Middle Schools’ Students’ ArtThe Art League Back Gallery is the home of this years 5th Idea Students Exhibition. We would like to thank Susie Preston and Nan Jacoby (pictured right) for working so hard to get all the students work displayed to such great advantage. When you walk into the gallery you are immediately astounded with the versatility of the many students whose works are covering every available space. Elaine Vice took photos of the young people who came to see their work, which you can view by clicking here. |

Amelie is an artist in residence with VSA Arts and travels to various facilities to teach art to individuals with disabilities and/or illness. |

David Hunter Intaglio Printmaking WorkshopThe class was an intensive work-out. Students produced work in line etching, aquatint, soft ground etching, single & multiple intaglio, a la poupee, a surface roll and chine colle. The group worked past the cut-off time and David stayed until 7:00pm both days. We were all exhausted but happy at days end and still wanting more! Click here for workshop photos |

A Definition of “Gallery Wrap”Gallery wrap is a term referring to a style of stretching on artist’s canvas so that the canvas wraps around the sides of the wooden frame (stretcher bars) and is secured to the back of the wooden frame. The result is the mechanisms used to secure the canvas ( staples or tacks) are not visible on the sides of the canvas. The sides are prepared and primed in the same manner the face of the canvas is prepared or primed. The sides may then be painted a solid color or painted to continue the image appearing on the face of the canvas. This method of stretching and preparing a canvas allows for a frame less presentation of the finished painting. Gallery Sitting: Please help us with sitting the gallery on Saturdays and Sundays from 1:00 to 4:00 PM. This is so important for us to be open these days for the public to visit our shows and of course our "Members' Gallery." Members Gallery: Bring your paintings in (no wider than 42") to be hung in the "Members Gallery." We have been successful in selling paintings from this area, but even if your work doesn't sell, it's a place to show your work. Visitors have often remarked about the work in this gallery, enjoying them sometimes more than the current show in the main galleries. And, we are proud to show off the work of our very talented members. |
FRAMING INFORMATION:Many new members ask about framing so we plan to have a demonstration and workshops soon on this subject. Our more experienced members recommend the following commercial framers: • Tropical Frame & Art Center (20% discount to artists), • Southern Paint gives a 20% discount on art supplies, 239 S.
