“4TH IDEA” - Helping Hands

Volusia County Middle & High School Students Exhibit December 3-30, 2006

The “Helping Hands” theme proved to be an inspiration to all the students’ work. This was an exceptional exhibit by the young artists. To quote Laura Stewart of the News Journal (who did a write-up on the show in the December 22 issue: “If the paintings, sculpture and other works that fill the Art League of Daytona each seem unusually heartfelt, that shouldn’t come as much of a surprise. The pieces are all by students from Volusia County’s middle and high schools, as well as its Juvenile Detention Center, and they all deal with a single theme: helping hands. What is surprising, and very inspiring....is how varied he young artists’ interpretations are.” The Art League is proud to host this exhibit every year.

At the opening the Art League was honored by Paul Finn, Superintendent of the Volusia Detention Center, who presented Certificates of appreciation to Gary Bobcik, Connie Krzyzowski & Nan Jacoby for the Art League’s support of Detention students and dedications of their time and services. Michael A. Osborn, Principal, Alternative Education Program also commended the Art League’s efforts over the past few years.

Suzie Preston, Visual Arts Specialist for Volusia County and Marianne Henry with the Detention center are two exceptional people responsible for putting this exhibit together every year. We appreciate all their efforts in presenting the work of their students.

FRED SAMUELSON’S
Water Media Workshop
December 9 & 10, 2006

All the participants enjoyed Fred Samuelson's water media workshop, and felt that Fred had inspired them with his “flow, drip and splash” technique to create carefully composed and controlled images of nature. The Art League is planning to have Fred give another workshop on the art of collage this year. We are proud to have such an accomplished artist to conduct workshops.

Don Kennedy’s
Free Watercolor Workshops
January 13 & 20, 2007

Click here to view Don Kennedy with students attending his workshops. These two workshops were offered free to members joining from October to Dec. 31, 2006 and included members bringing these new members in. This brought the League 25 new members and we are very grateful to Don for his efforts in conducting these workshops. We would like to thank Elaine Vice for her efforts in filling these workshops (mostly from students in her class). The Art League is fortunate in having members who give of their time to make the League the success that it is.

HELP! THE ART LEAGUE NEEDS HELP
WITH GALLERY SITTING

This is something you can do for the Art League. We have been able to keep the galleries open on Saturday and Sundays because of our members being here from 1:00-4:00 pm on those days. We failed to have people sign up for gallery sitting for 2007 when paintings were brought in for the members’ show. Usually we assign someone to handle this, but due to our administrators’ illness, we were running short handed. Nan is back with us now after surviving pneumonia.

We wish to thank all our members who helped us with this in 2006 (especially Clyde Finner who covered this once a month).

Please check your calendar and call us if you can host any Saturday or Sunday from March 10 to July 1. Phone: 258-3856. Thanks, Nan

MEMBERS’ NEWS:

Sandy Fraser, a member and teacher of our Saturday youth art class, married Todd Kiefer (a News Journal photographer). Several Art League members attended the wedding on November 24, 2006. Another member, Barbara Cronin, was the wedding planner and she did a beautiful job. They had a live band and the music was great! Shown on the left is Sandy and Todd dancing during the reception. If you have a wedding coming up we highly recommend Barbara. She can be reached at: COLLECTIONS: 252-9522. Click for photos of Sandy's wedding.

THANK YOU:

• Suzanne Clark for all the extra office work (Suzanne always helps out every Wednesday with mailings and or phone calls, and taking in paintings, for members’ shows.

• Peggy Landeen for helping in so many ways, selling calendars, keeping the bookkeeping up-to-date, taking in paintings at members’ shows, helping with mailings, etc.

• Hanging Committee: Toelle Hovan, Connie Krzyzowski, David Smith, Gary Bobcik and Keith Henry.

PARKING LOT - thank you to all!

Thanks to all of you who contributed to our parking lot project. We received $3,500 from members who included money for this with their dues renewals. We received two separate donations one for $15,000 and another for $2,000. A lot of work has gone into this project. Thanks to Stan Clark for all the preliminary work, going to City Hall, getting approvals and finding the engineer Neil MacGinnis, who did a great job with the designing and getting permits. Some of you may not know that we do have a very large parking lot across the street on the west side of Palmetto (two houses north of the Art League) look for the wooden fence with the Art League parking only sign. The new lot will be more convenient for carrying art supplies and on rainy days as it is right next to our building.

Gallery Sitting: Please help us with sitting the gallery on Saturdays and Sundays from 1:00 to 4:00 PM.  This is so important for us to be open these days for the public to visit our shows and of course our "Members' Gallery."

Members Gallery: Bring your paintings in (no wider than 42") to be hung in the "Members Gallery." We have been successful in selling paintings from this area, but even if your work doesn't sell, it's a place to show your work. Visitors have often remarked about the work in this gallery, enjoying them sometimes more than the current show in the main galleries. And, we are proud to show off the work of our very talented members.

FRAMING INFORMATION:

Many new members ask about framing so we plan to have a demonstration and workshops soon on this subject. Our more experienced members recommend the following commercial framers:
