Deborah Elmquist’s Two Day Workshop

Still life oil painter Deborah Elmquist held a workshop in January for new and some of her former students. They were delighted to have the opportunity to learn from her. You can observe in the pictures that they had an enjoyable time, too. Thank you, Debbie! Click here for workshop photos.

Marylee Voegele’s Experimental Explorations Acrylic Workshop

The gallery hummed with creativity as Marylee Voegele conducted a well-attended workshop on pushing watermedia to the limit. She inspired us to jump-start our imagination, expand our courage in our own style of painting and learn the art of layering with acrylics, floating gesso, and accenting with gouache. Not only were fantastic pieces of art created, but a great time was had by all! A special thank you to Greg and Connie Krzyzowski for laying tarps over the carpet in the gallery and setting up! Click here for workshop photos.

Rose Ann Samuelson's Figure Painting Workshop

On January 21-22-23, Rose Ann Samuelson returned to Daytona Beach from Rockledge to lead both old and new students in a 3-day figure painting workshop. We were glad to see her again, and all attending profited from her excellent and inspiring instruction. Click here for workshop photos.

Quarterly General Membership Meeting

On January 9, 2008 the Quarterly Annual Meeting was well-attended. Connie Krzyzowski updated everyone on the progress of the parking lot next to the Art League. Amelie Rogers explained the ECHO Grant for which we are applying from Volusia County. Connie announced the titles of the upcoming exhibitions. Click here for photos.

Amelie Rogers Demo at Membership Meeting

Amelie Rogers shared her extensive knowledge and talent with members at the Quarterly General Meeting. She demonstrated how she creates atmospheric perspective: painting wet on wet and creating soft landscapes. Amelie reminded the artists that they need to draw and paint every day. She suggested that when referring to photographs in the studio, do so only briefly then put them away. Try to remember the scene as observed in nature. Click here for photos.

Amelie teaches Oil Painting on Wednesday 12:30-3:30 PM

THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU!

To everyone who stepped up to our recent challenge of preparing the Echo Grant for our new parking lot: Betty Parker, Pat Flannery, Amelie Rogers, Betty Knoll and Connie and Greg Krzyzowski.

A Definition of “Gallery Wrap”

Gallery wrap is a term referring to a style of stretching on artist’s canvas so that the canvas wraps around the sides of the wooden frame (stretcher bars) and is secured to the back of the wooden frame. The result is the mechanisms used to secure the canvas ( staples or tacks) are not visible on the sides of the canvas. The sides are prepared and primed in the same manner the face of the canvas is prepared or primed. The sides may then be painted a solid color or painted to continue the image appearing on the face of the canvas. This method of stretching and preparing a canvas allows for a frame less presentation of the finished painting.

Gallery Sitting: Please help us with sitting the gallery on Saturdays and Sundays from 1:00 to 4:00 PM.  This is so important for us to be open these days for the public to visit our shows and of course our "Members' Gallery."

Members Gallery: Bring your paintings in (no wider than 42") to be hung in the "Members Gallery." We have been successful in selling paintings from this area, but even if your work doesn't sell, it's a place to show your work. Visitors have often remarked about the work in this gallery, enjoying them sometimes more than the current show in the main galleries. And, we are proud to show off the work of our very talented members.

FRAMING INFORMATION:

Many new members ask about framing so we plan to have a demonstration and workshops soon on this subject. Our more experienced members recommend the following commercial framers:

• Tropical Frame & Art Center (20% discount to artists), 2800 Nova Road , Bldg. A, S. Daytona - 788-6577.  Tropical Frame is also an awards sponsor!

• Southern Paint gives a 20% discount on art supplies, 239 S. Seagrave, Daytona Beach - 235-8107
