Still life oil painter Deborah Elmquist held a workshop in January for new and some of her former students. They were delighted to have the opportunity to learn from her. You can observe in the pictures that they had an enjoyable time, too. Thank you, Debbie! Click here for workshop photos.
We wish to thank Don Kennedy again for the free watercolor workshop he held in January. This popular workshop was offered free to new members who joined the Art League from October 15, 2007 through January 15, 2008 A good time was had by all participants.
We are very grateful to Don for his efforts in conducting these annual workshops. The Art League is fortunate to have members like him who give their time to make the League the success that it is .

The gallery hummed with creativity as Marylee Voegele conducted a well-attended workshop on pushing watermedia to the limit. She inspired us to jump-start our imagination, expand our courage in our own style of painting and learn the art of layering with acrylics, floating gesso, and accenting with gouache. Not only were fantastic pieces of art created, but a great time was had by all! A special thank you to Greg and Connie Krzyzowski for laying tarps over the carpet in the gallery and setting up! Click here for workshop photos.
We wish to thank RoseAnn Samuelson for her exciting acrylic workshop in January. The gallery was buzzing with activity for three days while RoseAnn taught her students her secrets to success and how to put a figure in an environment with content, developing their imagination and painting skills in the process.
Participants in this workshop were grateful for the opportunity to study with this exceptional artist, who has received numerous honors for her work and who generously shared her knowledge with her students.

In February Barbara Baldwin’s students not only learned the effect of pastel and watercolor, both wet and dry, on several different kinds of paper, but they also delved into monotypes and collages. There was electricity in the air during this four-day workshop. Barbara shared her talent and knowledge freely. Barbara is the recipient of many awards, including awards here at the Art League. Her pastels have been featured in “American Artist” and “The Pastel Journal.
The students will have the opportunity to display their art in Studio A during June 2008. Click here for photos.
General Membership Meeting We are in for a real treat when Peter Cerreta will conduct a critique for members who wish to bring artwork. His critiques during his weekly classes have been popular events here at the Art League.
PLEASE PLAN TO ATTEND AND BRING ARTWORK THAT YOU WOULD LIKE TO BE CRITIQUED! Or, just come and observe. You will learn from Peter’s critiques.
For more images of Peter's critiques, click here.
The Art League will be opening a gift shop consisting of work from the Art League members. Although we have our initial artists, we are looking for artists to be considered for changing exhibits in the gift shop about every three months. We are looking for handcrafted fine jewelry, small sculptures, pottery, and fiber arts.
Those who wish to apply contact Michelle Davidson by phone at 253-0994 or email davidson_michele@hotmail.com .

On January 9, 2008 the Quarterly Annual Meeting was well-attended. Connie Krzyzowski updated everyone on the progress of the parking lot next to the Art League. Amelie Rogers explained the ECHO Grant for which we are applying from Volusia County. Connie announced the titles of the upcoming exhibitions. Click here for photos.
Amelie Rogers shared her extensive knowledge and talent with members at the Quarterly General Meeting. She demonstrated how she creates atmospheric perspective: painting wet on wet and creating soft landscapes. Amelie reminded the artists that they need to draw and paint every day. She suggested that when referring to photographs in the studio, do so only briefly then put them away. Try to remember the scene as observed in nature. Click here for photos.
Amelie teaches Oil Painting on Wednesday 12:30-3:30 PM
The Art League is pleased with the response to our efforts to find sponsors for awards for our member shows. The list on the right are the sponsors that have pledged to support this program. The members’ shows where these awards will be presented are: • Annual Art League Members’ Juried Exhibit (January 2008) • “Figurative Speaking: - the Human Form (July 2008) • Members’ Showcase (October 2008) Click here for the flyer concerning the sponsor program. And we still have copies in the foyer if you know of anyone who might be interested in becoming a sponsor. As a sponsor, your contribution will help the Art League (a non-profit organization) to recognize, reward, and encourage our members to continue to grow as artists, both within the League and the community. |

A Definition of “Gallery Wrap”Gallery wrap is a term referring to a style of stretching on artist’s canvas so that the canvas wraps around the sides of the wooden frame (stretcher bars) and is secured to the back of the wooden frame. The result is the mechanisms used to secure the canvas ( staples or tacks) are not visible on the sides of the canvas. The sides are prepared and primed in the same manner the face of the canvas is prepared or primed. The sides may then be painted a solid color or painted to continue the image appearing on the face of the canvas. This method of stretching and preparing a canvas allows for a frame less presentation of the finished painting. Gallery Sitting: Please help us with sitting the gallery on Saturdays and Sundays from 1:00 to 4:00 PM. This is so important for us to be open these days for the public to visit our shows and of course our "Members' Gallery." Members Gallery: Bring your paintings in (no wider than 42") to be hung in the "Members Gallery." We have been successful in selling paintings from this area, but even if your work doesn't sell, it's a place to show your work. Visitors have often remarked about the work in this gallery, enjoying them sometimes more than the current show in the main galleries. And, we are proud to show off the work of our very talented members. |
FRAMING INFORMATION:Many new members ask about framing so we plan to have a demonstration and workshops soon on this subject. Our more experienced members recommend the following commercial framers: • Tropical Frame & Art Center (20% discount to artists), • Southern Paint gives a 20% discount on art supplies, 239 S.
