NEW WORKSHOP!!!

February 18-19-20, 2009

FRED SAMUELSON
UNDERSTANDING ABSTRACTION

Additional information available soon

 $125Members -- $150Non-members

ABSTRACTION

What is its purpose and how to comprehend it. Abstraction is something that summarizes or concentrates the essentials of a large thing or several things. So sayeth Webster.

Or, so sayeth Samuelson: This class will have an exciting appeal, experimenting with various painting surfaces, sketch development and elimination of perspective without the loss of representational images. We will identify the subject and emphasize it...a path to perfect painting! Students are asked to bring sketches and material from which to work.

After completing his MFA at the Art Institute of Chicago, Fred Samuelson was chairman of the faculty at the San Antonio Art Institute, and for 24 years was a faculty member and the head of graduate studies for the famed Instituto Allende Art School in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico.

And congratulations to Fred for being awarded Finalist in the December or January Artist's Magazine for his "Odyssey of the Sea" painting - Abstract/Experimental Category. Click here to view award and painting.

Handmade Papermaking
Workshop by Joan Williams

  December 4, 2008, 9:00 to 4:00 P. M.

Click for additional information

$50 Members -- $75 Non-members

WHY MAKE PAPER?

Vast amounts of reclaimable waste paper are thrown away each year. With this workshop we will explore how to recycle and produce your sheets of handmade paper with relatively little expense. We will talk about the use of paper in history and how handmade paper is ideal for creative use.

Joan Williams’ artwork reflects her love of history of ancient peoples, textiles and nature. Whenever she travels or visits museums, she eagerly looks for exhibits of ancient textiles, spindles, baskets and pottery. They speak to her of forgotten ancient peoples who spun and wove beautiful objects for everyday life. As she works in mixed media, she imagines what they would say to her if they could communicate today.

A Definition of “Gallery Wrap”

Gallery wrap is a term referring to a style of stretching on artist’s canvas so that the canvas wraps around the sides of the wooden frame (stretcher bars) and is secured to the back of the wooden frame. The result is the mechanisms used to secure the canvas ( staples or tacks) are not visible on the sides of the canvas. The sides are prepared and primed in the same manner the face of the canvas is prepared or primed. The sides may then be painted a solid color or painted to continue the image appearing on the face of the canvas. This method of stretching and preparing a canvas allows for a frame less presentation of the finished painting.

Gallery Sitting: Please help us with sitting the gallery on Saturdays and Sundays from 1:00 to 4:00 PM.  This is so important for us to be open these days for the public to visit our shows and of course our "Members' Gallery."

Members Gallery: Bring your paintings in (no wider than 42") to be hung in the "Members Gallery." We have been successful in selling paintings from this area, but even if your work doesn't sell, it's a place to show your work. Visitors have often remarked about the work in this gallery, enjoying them sometimes more than the current show in the main galleries. And, we are proud to show off the work of our very talented members.

FRAMING INFORMATION:

Many new members ask about framing so we plan to have a demonstration and workshops soon on this subject. Our more experienced members recommend the following commercial framers:

• Tropical Frame & Art Center (20% discount to artists), 2800 Nova Road , Bldg. A, S. Daytona - 788-6577.  Tropical Frame is also an awards sponsor!

• Southern Paint gives a 20% discount on art supplies, 239 S. Seagrave, Daytona Beach - 235-8107
