“Starting about 1927, a group of young artists met to go out to sketch from nature anywhere they found an interesting subject or a beautiful spot around Daytona Beach…..”

— Vision of Don J. Emery

With that vision a seed was planted, one that would flourish over the next 100 years.

THE STORY BEHIND THE ART LEAGUE

Beginning with a group of young artists in 1927, the Art League, once a seed, has grown over the past 100 years into a mighty oak. This has all been made possible through ongoing support of all the members, artists, exhibitors, volunteers, supporters, benefactors, teachers, students, grantors, directors and administrators.

The original group of artists grew in number, and in 1932 Don J. Emery and his friend, John Rogers, organized them into a more formal club. A Charter was granted on May 28, 1932. The first exhibition was on the top floor of the Yowell-Drew store, known later as Ivey’s on the corner of Magnolia and Beach Streets. One of the contributing reasons leading to the foundation was the need to make available a greater opportunity to exhibit the increasing number of artists who had settled in the Halifax area.

In 1944, the Art League had reached the stage of growth where it needed its own headquarters. The fund drive began. Property was bought, plans were drawn and on April 4, 1948 the Art League headquarters were opened.

In following the same mission and vision, as Don J. Emery, we ask for your continued support to this wonderful organization that has morphed from antiquity to technology and continues to encourage and promote the creation and appreciation of fine arts by offering artists, of all skill levels, opportunities through education, exhibition, outreach, and fellowship.
Being the oldest art organization in Volusia County we have an amazing history and with your help, an even greater future. These are times when your donation will make an enormous difference.

This story is both a thank you and an invitation. We welcome your offering however large or small.

With Gratitude,
The Art League of Daytona Beach
