ACRYLIC PAINTING: CONCEPTS AND CRITIQUE

Tuition Fee:     $25.00 members $30.00 non-members

Class tuition is collected at the beginning of each class by the instructor and payment may be made by cash, check or credit card to the Art League of Daytona Beach.  Payment by credit card will incur a 3% service fee.

Course Objective and Description:

This is a class designed for the novice or those already painting in either abstract or realistic styles. Guidance is focused on the individual student with an emphasis on composition, color and design. Students are encouraged to continue working on paintings already started or begin new works or a new series. For those just beginning, ideas and ways to get started will be suggested. Basic acrylic materials and techniques will be covered. The main focus is on individual critique of paintings in progress.

Materials List:

1.     Set of basic acrylic paint colors including titanium white, Paynes grey and an acrylic matt or gloss medium.

2.     Assorted brush sizes

3.     2 quart size or larger containers for water

4.     Wood, plastic or paper palette

5.     Stretched canvas or wood panel 12 x 12” or larger

(Students may bring any acrylic paints and materials that they already have. Other materials and techniques will be introduced as the class develops)

Brief Bio for David Fithian

David Fithian grew up in Daytona Beach, Florida as a “child artist”.  In 1967 he attended the Art Students League in New York.  Beginning in 1968 he attended the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia, PA and went on to managed the Graphics Department at Drexel University in Philadelphia, PA until 1980.    

In the early 1980’s he taught photography at the Crealde School of Art in Winter Park, Florida and for eight years a watercolor classes at the Maitland Art Center in Maitland, Florida until 1990.  During the 1990’s Fithian Studios was in Eureka Springs, Arkansas as a commercial photography and fine art painting and drawing studio/gallery. 

From 2001 to 2020 he was Curator of Art and Exhibitions at the Museum of Art – DeLand, Florida while maintaining a painting studio which remains active.  He has continuously exhibited work in juried exhibitions and several one person shows over the years and received numerous awards along the way.
